As proclaimed in the Preamble to the Charter of the United Nations: “We the peoples of the United Nations determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind,” the United Nations Security Council holds primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security since its establishment on 24 October 1945.

In this committee, the Council will discuss the 1964 Cyprus Crisis with the aim of stabilizing the ongoing conflict between the Turkish and Greek communities. Set by the collapse of the 1960 Zurich-London constitutional framework and the intercommunal violence in December 1963, the crisis had already claimed hundreds of lives and displaced thousands by early 1964. The Council will focus on preventing further violence and escalation of the dispute through peacekeeping operations to restore order and facilitate a return to normal conditions.
